Budgeting as a couple

A shared budget is mostly a conversation. A file can make the numbers visible, but it cannot decide what “shared” means for the people using it.

Choose what is shared

Start by agreeing on the expenses the shared budget tracks: household costs, a joint goal, or everything. There is no required split. Clear categories are more helpful than pretending two people have identical priorities.

Make decisions together

Give money jobs together and discuss changes before moving money between shared envelopes. The useful outcome is a visible choice, not a rigid rule imposed by an app.

Use one file carefully

Ensobre keeps budget data in a local file. A household can place that file in a folder they manage, but each person should understand where it is and how copies are kept. A license can be activated on up to three computers in the household.

Avoid simultaneous edits

Do not edit the same budget file from two computers at the same time. Let one person finish and close it before the other edits. If the app reports that the file changed on disk, review the choice rather than overwriting blindly.

Review the plan regularly

A short regular check-in can cover upcoming bills, changes in income, and envelopes that need attention. Keep the conversation about the next decision, not blame for the last one.

A complete example

A household has $2,600 in its shared account. It assigns $1,100 to housing, $500 to food, $220 to utilities, $180 to transportation, $200 to a shared goal, and $150 to household extras: $2,350 total. The $250 left in Ready to assign is a decision the household can make together.

Common questions

Must every account be shared?

No. Track only what the people involved agree belongs in the shared budget.

Can both people open the file?

They can use the same local file, but should not edit it at the same time. Take turns and review any disk-change warning.
